On June 4th, 2025, a powerful moment unfolded at the Office of the County First Lady in Kakamega. In a heartfelt and symbolic ceremony, H.E. Priscilla Ambetsa, Director of Touch a Life, officially passed the baton of leadership in maternal and child health to the First Lady of Kakamega County, crowning her as the Champion for Maternal and Child Health Survival.
But this was more than just a ceremonial gesture, it was a strategic and deeply meaningful move to rally countywide political support and community action for maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH).
“Today, I hand over the mantle,” Priscilla declared with emotion. “I ask the First Lady to continue leading the affairs of our mothers professionally, compassionately, and consistently. A woman understands a woman best.”
Her call was clear: that the First Lady would use her powerful voice and platform to advocate for stronger policies, amplify maternal health issues, and stand up for the rights of women and children in every ward and village of Kakamega County.
A Renewed Pledge: “No More Lives Lost”
In her acceptance speech, the First Lady embraced the responsibility with passion and resolve. She pledged her full commitment to the success of Barasa Care, the county’s new maternal and child health program, building on the solid foundation laid by Oparanya Care.
“We want our mothers to walk through pregnancy safely, deliver safely, and return home with healthy babies,” she said. “We do not want to lose any mother or child ever again—not to preventable causes.”
Her message was one of equity and access. She urged women across Kakamega County to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), emphasizing that healthcare should never be out of reach due to cost.
“Let no mother stay at home because of money. When you register and contribute as advised, you will be taken care of.”
This renewed leadership marks a turning point for MNCH in Kakamega. With the First Lady at the helm, backed by community advocates like Priscilla Ambetsa and the OMMI consortium, the county is forging a united front to end maternal and child deaths and to ensure every woman and child receives the care, respect, and protection they deserve.
