Funded by the European Union (EU) and co-funded by the Aga Khan Foundation–UK, the Project Mama Na Mtoto wa was implemented by International Centre for Reproductive Health–Kenya (ICRHK) in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation.
Implemented in Kwale County, the project aimed to contribute to the reduction of maternal, neonatal, and child mortality and morbidity in Msambweni District through a combination of behavior change communication interventions, capacity building, and health systems strengthening.
Impact
Through this project, ICRHK and partners:
- Empowered communities and civil society groups to address challenges related to safe motherhood and childhood illnesses.
- Promoted appropriate health and health-seeking behaviors, increasing demand for quality maternal, neonatal, and child health, family planning, and nutrition services.
- Established, strengthened, and sustained community units around health facilities in alignment with the Government of Kenya’sCommunity Health Strategy.
- Built the capacity of the healthcare system to better meet the needs of mothers, newborns, and children.
- Supported the implementation of the nationalcommunity strategy across 11 government dispensaries in three districts of Kenya’s Coast Province, advancing equitable access to maternal and child health services.
