Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by ICRHK in partnership with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), the PMA2020 Kenya Project utilized innovative mobile technology to routinely collect data on family planning and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Data was gathered at household and facility levels by a network of trained female Resident Enumerators using mobile devices, enabling real-time validation, analysis, and dissemination to stakeholders.
Covering 11 counties- Bungoma, Kakamega, Kericho, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kitui, Nairobi, Nandi, Nyamira, Siaya, and West Pokot—the project supported the integration of rapid, cost-effective data collection into Kenya’s national monitoring and evaluation systems.
Impact
Through this initiative, ICRHK and partners:
- Established one of Kenya’s first large-scale digital data collection platforms for reproductive health and WASH.
- Strengthened national and county capacity for evidence-based planning and policy formulation.
- Improved the availability, timeliness, and use of family planning and health data to guide programming and resource allocation.
