Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by International Centre for Reproductive Health Kenya (ICRHK) in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), with overall direction and support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the PMA2020/Kenya Nutrition Project expanded the PMA platform to collect comprehensive nutrition data.
Conducted in 11 counties: Nairobi, Kilifi, Nandi, Nyamira, Kiambu, Bungoma, Siaya, Kericho, Kitui, Kakamega, and West Pokot, the project utilized a multi-stage stratified cluster design with urban-rural and county-level strata. A sample of 151 enumeration areas (EAs) was drawn by KNBS from the Kenya Round 6 PMA2020 family planning survey, with 56 households randomly selected per EA for household surveys. The project assessed nutrition-specific interventions, diet, and nutritional status among children under 5, adolescent girls, and women of reproductive age, alongside household food security, access to fortified foods, and the readiness of public and private facilities to provide nutrition services.
Objectives
- Provide government and development partners with national-level data on nutrition-specific intervention coverage, diet, and nutritional status for children under 5, adolescent girls, and women of reproductive age.
- Assess household-level food security and access to fortified foods.
- Evaluate the readiness of public and private facilities to deliver nutrition services.
Impact
Through this project, ICRHK and partners:
- Generated high-quality, actionable data on nutrition, food security, and facility readiness to inform national health strategies.
- Strengthened evidence-based decision-making for nutrition interventions targeting maternal, newborn, and child health.
- Enhanced national capacity for integrating nutrition data into routine monitoring systems
