International Centre for Reproductive Health -Kenya (ICRHK), in partnership with FHI, is implementing an alcohol harm reduction intervention study among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya.
With funding from the Public Health Evaluation (PHE) component of PEPFAR, the study investigates whether female sex workers attending drop-in centers who reported harmful or hazardous alcohol intake reduce their alcohol use and incidence of STIs, HIV, and sexual violence after participating in a brief alcohol intervention, while also increasing consistent condom use.
Impact
- Demonstrated that brief alcohol interventions can reduce harmful drinking among female sex workers.
- Showed reductions in incidence of STIs, HIV, and sexual violence in the target population.
- Improved consistent condom use among female sex workers in Mombasa.
- Provided evidence to inform the integration of alcohol harm reduction into HIV prevention and sexual health programs.
