Overview of the project

Its overall objective was to contribute to the reduction of commercial sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children as well as improve service delivery to the victims through institutional linkages of both children and caregivers.

The project intervention aimed at identifying children victims of CSEC in Kisauni and Changamwe Sub-counties in Mombasa, link them up to social and psychological support and educate the community to identify and report CSEC. The project used two approaches; school-based and community-based

Impact

Key Achievements

  • 1,501 adolescents and teenagersaffected by commercial sexual exploitation were identified, 1,334 through community health volunteers, with additional cases referred by peers, teachers, and local leaders.
  • All 1,501 childrenreceived psychosocial counselling and were connected to support groups. 66 children were linked to vocational training in hairdressing, tailoring, and motor vehicle mechanics, and are now using these skills to earn a living.
  • 4,263 in-school childrenwere reached with CSEC prevention education through school-based sessions between January and September 2019.
  • 365 stakeholderswere sensitized on CSEC prevention and response. Among the identified children, 942 completed counselling sessions, and 604 of them self-reported exiting commercial sexual exploitation.
