Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and implemented by International Centre for Reproductive Health–Kenya (ICRHK) in partnership with DAMAX Solutions, the EVIDENCE TZ project aimed to uncover the underlying factors contributing to the stagnation and low uptake of modern family planning (FP) methods in Tanzania.

This research provided an in-depth analysis of the social, cultural, financial, and political dynamics that shape contraceptive access and use, generating actionable insights to strengthen FP programming and inform national policy directions.

Impact
Through this study, ICRHK and partners:

  • Explored social and cultural determinantsthat influence contraceptive choices, revealing how community norms, gender dynamics, and misconceptions affect FP uptake.
  • Assessed financing trends for FP interventions, identifying gaps in resource allocation and their implications for equitable service delivery.
  • Analyzed the political environmentand its influence on public perception and policy implementation since 2015, particularly in relation to contraceptive advocacy and service provision.
  • Generated practical recommendationsfor government, development partners, and implementers to enhance FP access and acceptance in Tanzania.

By illuminating the multi-layered barriers to contraceptive use, EVIDENCE TZ contributed to a stronger understanding of how to build supportive, informed, and sustainable family planning systems in Tanzania and the region.
