Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by International Centre for Reproductive Health–Kenya (ICRHK) in partnership with Aga Khan University (AKU), the Exemplars in Family Planning project sought to identify and learn from countries that have achieved exceptional progress in advancing family planning outcomes. Implemented across Kenya, Malawi, and Senegal, the initiative was part of the broader Exemplars in Global Health program, which aims to guide public health decision-makers worldwide by uncovering evidence-based lessons from high-performing countries.
The project was grounded in the belief that scaling success is best achieved by identifying existing exemplars, understanding the drivers behind their progress, and adapting these strategies to local contexts.
Impact

- Identified effective strategies and innovations that drove increased uptake of voluntary modern contraceptive methods.
- Contributed to the global evidence base on family planning success stories, offering insights for replication and scale-up across diverse settings.
- Positioned Kenya, Malawi, and Senegal as leading examples of countries that surpassed their FP2020 targets, providing a roadmap for sustainable family planning advancement.
