ICRHK
Projects

Overview:

The Genesis Project is a collaborative initiative between ICRHK and Jhpiego, aimed at assessing the readiness of the public health system to transition from the current syndromic-based approach to a diagnostic-based approach for STI management in Kenya, using Point of Care (PoC) diagnostics.

The PoC device used in this project was developed by Aptitude Metrix in California, USA. It is a multiplex molecular-based test designed to detect Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis.

The Genesis Project is structured into five phases:

  1. Qualitative Formative Assessment
  2. Laboratory-Based Validation Using Stored Samples
  3. Facility Assessment
  4. Mixed-Methods Field Evaluation in Kilifi and Nairobi Counties, targeting over 4,000 STI clients across both public and private healthcare facilities
  5. Costing Evaluation of STI diagnostics using PoC technology

The project is scheduled to run from January 2024 to December 2026 and is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Women’s Health Initiative.
