Funded by KindernotHilfe, this 5-year child protection project (2020 -2025) focuses on children (10 to 17 years) who are affected by or at risk of Commercial Sexual Exploitation in Jomvu & Kisauni, Mombasa County. Partners include the Department of Health, the Directorate of Children Services, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Interior and Local Administration, and local community-based organizations.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the protection and improvement of the health of children at risk of and affected by CSEC and sexual abuse by identifying and supporting them, and supporting community structures.
The project aims to:
- Identify and support 885 children affected by CSECin Kisauni and Changamwe through trained CHVs and VCOs. Using a case-management approach, we will offer counselling, mentorship, and economic strengthening to reduce the risk of repeat exploitation by December 2025.
- Build the capacity of 10,000 in-school children, 1,000 out-of-school children (including children with disabilities), parents, teachers, and caregiversto recognize, report, and respond to CSEC and sexual violence through peer education, life-skills sessions, and community sensitization.
- Strengthen the economic and parenting skills of parents and caregiversof the 885 affected children to improve household stability and reduce vulnerability to further exploitation.
- Strengthen community and government structuresat county, sub-county, and grassroots levels to prevent, identify, and respond to CSEC, and to improve coordination of protection and prevention efforts.
Key Achievements
- 123 childrenhave received educational and vocational support, helping them stay engaged in learning and build future opportunities.
- 60% of childrencompleting counselling sessions report meaningful positive behaviour change.
- Over 400 parents and caregivershave strengthened their skills in positive parenting, financial management, and economic empowerment.
- 11 caregiver self-help groupshave been established, enabling families to participate in table banking and small investments that improve household stability.
