Funded by the UCL Institute of Child Health’s Centre for International Health and Development (CIHD), a London-based organization dedicated to improving maternal and child health, and implemented by International Centre for Reproductive Health–Kenya (ICRHK) in collaboration with the County Government of Kwale, the MOMI Project was carried out in Kwale County.

The project aimed to strengthen immediate postpartum care (PPC) for mothers and newborns by enhancing the knowledge and skills of both facility- and community-based health workers, and by promoting timely home follow-up visits after delivery. It also sought to increase awareness and uptake of postpartum family planning (PPFP) during the first year after childbirth through community and facility-level dialogue approaches.

Impact
Through the MOMI Project, ICRHK and partners:

• Enhanced the capacity ofcommunity-based health workers (CHWs), with 546 CHWs trained on the importance of postpartum care and timely referrals within 48 hours after delivery.
• Improved thequality and accessibility of maternal and newborn care, ensuring that mothers and infants received essential services during the critical postpartum period.
• Promotedcommunity awareness and advocacy around postpartum health and family planning.
• Strengthenedhealth systems and linkages between communities and facilities to sustain improvements in postpartum care and family planning uptake.
