Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by ICRHK in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Technical University of Mombasa, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, the PMA for Action Project advanced Kenya’s capacity for real-time health data collection and use.
Covering 12 counties, Nairobi, Kilifi, Nandi, Nyamira, Kiambu, Bungoma, Siaya, Kericho, Kitui, Kakamega, West Pokot, and Migori—the project used innovative mobile technology to conduct low-cost, rapid-turnaround, nationally representative surveys tracking key family planning and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators.
Impact
Through this study, ICRHK and partners:
- Strengthened Kenya’s national data systems through integration of digital, real-time monitoring platforms.
- Enhanced the credibility and policy relevance of family planning and WASH data through evaluation and validation by KNBS under the Citizen-Generated Data (CGD) framework.
- Provided high-quality, timely data that informed national planning, programming, and policy decisions.
