Period of implementation

(Phase 1 -2019–2020), Phase 2- Dec 2022- May 2025

Location: Nairobi

Overview of the project

Phase 1

In 2019, the PMA Agile Gender/GBV Study was launched in Nairobi with a cohort of youth aged 15–24 years to measure their contraceptive behavior dynamics over time. In 2020, following the outbreak of COVID-19, the PMA Gender COVID-19 Study was conducted with the same cohort to assess knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, risk perception, socioeconomic effects, and collateral impacts such as gender-based violence among adolescents and youth. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to better understand contraceptive dynamics and COVID-19–related information among this population.

Phase 2

Four years later, a follow-up study was implemented to extend the YRDSS youth cohort to include those aged 15–28 years. This phase focuses on measurement innovation in gender equity, with particular attention to GBV experiences, attitudes, and norms. The study aims to generate new evidence on priority gender topics and to validate robust measures that can fill existing evidence gaps, thereby informing policy and programs in Kenya.
