Overview of the project
The overall goal of ICRHK RESECY program was to have an informed community contributing to rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of sexual exploited children and youth in Kilindini and Mombasa districts.
The project objectives were:
- To sensitize communities on the problem of sexual exploitation of children and youth in Kilindini and Mombasa districts.
- To rescue, rehabilitate and reintegrate a total of 25 sexually exploited children and youth in the two districts.
- To sensitize and equip 150 community representatives from the two districts with knowledge and skills to participate in the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of sexually exploited children and youth.
Implementation strategies (Design) were:
- Community sensitization and education of local leaders and decision makers
- Capacity building and training for youth peer educators to advocate against youth and child sexual exploitation
- Rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of sexually exploited children and youth through community participation, network with peer educators and street walks to identify and rescue sexually exploited children and children in sex trade
Impact
- A total of 86 key community leaders, including chiefs, assistant chiefs, village elders, women’s group leaders, and religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim faiths, were sensitized and equipped with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in the rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration of sexually exploited children and youth.
- Ten community outreach meetings were conducted across Mombasa and Kilindini Districts, increasing community awareness and engagement in the fight against sexual exploitation of children and youth.
- Twenty police officers in charge of gender desks at key police stations (Makupa, Nyali, Changamwe, Bamburi, Port, and Central) were sensitized, enhancing the capacity of law enforcement to respond to cases of child sexual exploitation.
- A total of 320 female peer educators were sensitized, strengthening their ability to advocate against sexual exploitation of children and youth within their communities
