The overarching objective of this study was to provide an estimate of the prevalence of sexual violence among school-going children and to assess their attitude and confidence in the police, which determines their reporting of these cases.

Scope: Kilifi, Kwale, Kisumu, and Homa Bay Counties

Key partners: Police (Ministry of Interior), Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education

Research Objectives:

  1. To determine the incidence of sexual violence amongst children and young people <21 years (self-reported by themselves or among other minors within the community).
  2. To determine the confidence of girls and boys in the police as defined by 1) their willingness to seek help from the police following sexual violence, 2) willingness to refer peers, and 3) perceptions on the ability or willingness of the police to assist in case of sexual violence.
  3. To assess the intermediate “stepping stones” or indicators of progress, because of the 160 Girls and National Police Service Police Training that can reshape community attitudes and practices.
